Description

A rare and diminutive Napoleon III–era French perfume bottle, crafted in the mid–19th century (c. 1850–1870). These petite scent flacons were popular novelty pieces in the Second Empire period, often made for travel or as charming keepsakes.

This example is especially desirable for its natural sea shell body, mounted with a hand-worked repoussé silver cap in ornate French Second Empire motifs. The cap form, decorative language, and shaping are all stylistically correct for the period.

The bottle opens to reveal its original silver stopper with mother of pearl accent, and the shell shows beautiful, naturally mottled coloration. Ideal for collectors of vanity items, French 19th-century objets de vertu, or “curiosity cabinet” decorative objects.
