rare turn of the century French Belle Époque mother of pearl & enamelled bird candlestick art nouveau branch candlestick
Description
An exceptional French Art Nouveau candlestick (or “bougeoir”), crafted around 1895–1910, combining mother of pearl, cast metal and delicate hand-painted detail.
Made as a Belle Époque seaside souvenir, this rare candlestick features a natural mother-of-pearl shell cradled on sculptural branch-form feet, with a charming hand-painted songbird perched along one side. The branch structure and organic curves are characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement, while the engraved dish reflects the elegant coastal tourism of turn of the century France.
The candle holder is silver-plated brass in a turned baluster form, adding a refined contrast to the iridescent shell. The bird and branching legs are cast in spelter and finished with cold-applied polychrome, a technique widely used in French decorative ateliers at the turn of the century.
A unique and truly one of a kind piece, it’s perfect for a desk, console, or bedside vignette. Beautiful patina throughout and rich pearlescence to the shell, it’s a wonderful example of Belle Époque craftsmanship.
