Description

A beautifully preserved example of late–19th-century French tableware, this double salt cellar by Christofle captures the restrained elegance of the Belle Époque dining table. Crafted in silverplate with Christofle’s distinctive lozenge maker’s mark and six-digit production stamp, the piece features a graceful central handle, a weighted baluster stem, and two original hand-cut glass liners that rest securely within the silvered rings.

These refined double cellars—known in France as salières doubles—were hallmarks of formal service, used for salt, fine condiments, or caviar. This particular piece dates to c. 1890–1910, the period when Christofle was at the height of its influence in European silverwork, supplying aristocratic households, luxury hotels, and grand ocean liners.

The silverplate has developed the soft, understated patina collectors love, and both glass inserts remain intact with their delicate faceted undersides. Elegant, functional, and wonderfully collectible, it serves beautifully today as a salt-and-pepper presentation, a caviar server, or a small tabletop objet that elevates any setting with quiet French refinement.
