19th century French verdure tapestry panel, Aubusson style pastoral scene
Description
A beautifully muted French verdure tapestry panel, handwoven in wool and cotton, dating to the early–mid 19th century (circa 1820–1860). This classic Aubusson-style weaving captures a pastoral landscape with towering trees, dense foliage, and an architectural manor emerging through the greenery — a serene woodland scene rendered in soft variegated greens, taupe, and warm ochre.
The panel shows the gentle atmospheric fading typical of natural vegetable dyes, while the reverse reveals the original depth of color. Woven on a low-warp loom, the tapestry retains its characteristic textural ribbing and early 19th-century palette. The scale is ideal for modern interiors, adding quiet drama and a sense of European history to any room.
Professionally mounted to a simple sewn edge and ready for display.
Beautiful antique condition with expected, authentic oxidation of vegetal dyes, soft abrash, a few scattered areas of light wear, and edge fraying consistent with age. The reverse displays the original, richer palette — typical of a naturally aged verdure. Fully stable and ready to hang.
